(paperback / no coil binding) This is the 1st book in a 5-volume series focused on helping students develop number sense using two high-leverage manipulatives: ten frames and a Rekenrek (often called an abacus). The entire book series is designed to take students on a learning journey through the world of numbers and their operations, from basic counting through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, with an underlying focus on place value. Each unit progresses from hands-on work to visual diagrams to abstract equations and often culminates naturally in mental Math skills.
All students using this series should begin with Volume 1; older students can use the condensed version. This book covers: *how to intentionally and strategically use a Rekenrek and ten frames | *subitizing | *composing and decomposing numbers | *combinations of 5 and 10 | *place value | *"Math names" for 11 - 20 | even and odd numbers | *introduction to U.S. money | *ordering numbers on a hundred chart (overlaid on a Rekenrek).
